'The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies' Stays Atop of Box Office

The last installment in 'The Hobbit' movie franchise battled over the first spot against newcomers, Angelina Jolie-directed 'Unbroken' and 'Into the Woods'.

AceShowbiz - "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" once again ruled the box office. The movie depicting the adventure of Bilbo and the Dwarves retained its position on the top spot after garnering an estimated $41.4 million in the U.S., bringing its total domestic gross to $168.5 million. It has so far collected approximately $573.6 million globally.

Two new releases, Angelina Jolie-directed "Unbroken" and "Into the Woods" which boasts the cast ensemble such as Meryl Streep, Johnny Depp, Emily Blunt, Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick, could not shake the Peter Jackson-directed movie from its position. The WWII drama starring Jack O'Connell landed on the second place after it raked in an estimated $31.7 million. "Into the Woods" is trailing not far behind with approximately $31 million. "Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" and musical film "Annie" round out the top five with $20.6 million and $16.6 million respectively.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1" is on number 6 after raking in an estimated $10 million. Another new release, "The Gambler" starring Mark Wahlberg, is on the next spot with approximately $9.3 million. Benedict Cumberbatch and Keira Knightley-starring WWII drama "The Imitation Game" is placed eighth after collecting another $7.9 million. Biblical flick "Exodus: Gods and Kings" and Reese Witherspoon-starring film "Wild" are placed ninth and tenth respectively.

Seth Rogen and James Franco's much-talked-about comedy "The Interview" did not make it into the top ten. The film which shows the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un was released in select theaters and digitally on Christmas Day following a threat from hackers who call themselves Guardians of Peace. It is now on number 16 after raking in approximately $1.8 million. Sony Pictures Entertainment additionally said that "The Interview" earned $15 million from the digital release.
