The teaser opens with Turner applying makeup at a vanity, transforming herself from her natural blonde hair into a chic short wig. As she flees from police officers and finds herself in perilous situations, Turner embodies a range of personas, including a brunette bobbed girl, a ring-stealing thief and a seemingly demure woman in a blazer.
The synopsis for the series reveals that Joan's journey begins as a 20-year-old, trapped in a violent marriage and desperate to escape her past. Making "heartbreaking decisions" to secure a better life for herself and her daughter, she ultimately embraces a life of crime.
Fans will remember that Turner was in the midst of filming Joan in September 2023 when her separation from husband Joe Jonas became public. Speaking about that difficult time, Turner described it as "the worst few days of my life."
