From novels to TV: Discover the sci-fi hits like The Expanse & Silo, and why the acclaimed cyberpunk novel Luminous is the next big adaptation.

AceShowbiz - Many successful science fiction television shows have their origins in novels, providing studios with rich, well-developed intellectual properties and fresh narratives to engage viewers. Notable examples include The Expanse, adapted from James S. A. Corey’s expansive novels centered on political warfare, Silo, based on Hugh Howey’s dystopian mystery series, and Foundation, which brings Isaac Asimov’s classic space opera to the screen. As familiar franchises become scarce, studios increasingly turn to literary sci-fi for new stories.
One such promising work is Luminous, a 2025 science fiction novel by Silvia Park. This cyberpunk neo-noir narrative unfolds in a futuristic, reunified Korea and explores the lives of three siblings—two human and one robot. Upon its release, Luminous received widespread acclaim from critics. Remarkably, the production company Media Res, known for acclaimed projects like The Morning Show, Pachinko, and Scenes From a Marriage, secured the adaptation rights three years before the novel’s official publication, planning to develop it as a television series.
Set in a near-future Korea where humanoid robots coexist with humans but are legally classified as property, Luminous centers on siblings Jun and Morgan, who are human, alongside Yoyo, a robot raised as their brother. After Yoyo mysteriously disappears, Jun becomes a detective specializing in Robot Crimes, investigating missing AI cases while coping with cybernetic enhancements acquired during the Reunification War. Morgan, meanwhile, works at Imagine Friends, a robotics company. The story gains momentum when a young girl named Ruijie befriends a damaged robot child found in a scrapyard, setting off a chain of discoveries.
Critics hailed Luminous as one of the standout science fiction novels of 2025. Abigail Nussbaum of Locus Magazine described it as a "contender for one of the best science fiction novels of the year," drawing comparisons to cyberpunk classics like Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The novel earned a starred review from Library Journal, which praised it as a "momentous tour de force" that differentiates itself by focusing less on the debate over robot humanity and more on the intricate relationships where those distinctions blur.
Media Res acquired the adaptation rights in 2022 after reviewing early manuscript drafts and development proposals. While securing rights before a book’s release is uncommon, it is not unprecedented, especially when studios identify compelling new content. The company’s executives were drawn to the novel’s character-driven approach and its unique setting, which offers a fresh perspective distinct from typical Western cyberpunk narratives. Acquiring the rights early also helped Media Res avoid a potential competitive bidding war that might have inflated the cost once the book’s buzz grew.
Media Res has a strong reputation for producing character-focused, genre-spanning stories. Their portfolio includes the critically acclaimed Pachinko for Apple TV+, which won a Peabody Award, HBO’s Scenes from a Marriage miniseries starring Jessica Chastain and Oscar Isaac, and Boots Riley’s surreal comedy I’m a Virgo on Prime Video. In addition to Luminous, the company is also developing an adaptation of David Cronenberg’s sci-fi classic Scanners.
Overall, Media Res appears well-suited to bring Luminous to life as a complex, character-driven television series. Although details about the adaptation remain limited, readers interested in the full story can explore Silvia Park’s novel now before it premieres on screen as a highly anticipated sci-fi series.
