She wrote that she felt like Spears was singing directly to her when she was five years old. She added, "24 years later, these words hit different."
In Halsey's version, she sings the chorus with a first-person narrative, omitting the original "she's" that referred to Spears. Her lyrics express the same sentiments of emotional turmoil and loneliness despite external success.
"But I'm so lucky, I'm a star, but I cry, cry, cry in the lonely heart thinking, if there's nothing missing in my life, then why do these tears come at night," Halsey sings.
