When asked if she had any new project lined up, the 89-year-old actress, who most recently appeared in the 2022 film "Spirited," told a journalist at the Chelsea Flower Show in London, "No, no. I can't even see!"
Dench's comments raise concerns about her health, as she suffers from age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a condition that affects around 700,000 people in the UK. AMD is a leading cause of sight loss and can make it difficult for individuals to perform activities that require close-range vision, including acting in films.
Despite her challenges, Dench previously remained determined to continue her career. In an interview with Louis Theroux in 2022, she expressed, "I don't want to retire. I'm not doing much at the moment because I can't see. It's bad." Her photographic memory allows her to continue performing lines, even with limited vision.
Throughout her illustrious career, Dench has earned numerous accolades, including an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in the 1998 film "Shakespeare in Love."
