Artist of the Week
Summer Walker

Week 48 of 2019

Summer Walker

Summer Walker is truly a hardworking woman. Even though she had to work as a cleaner and stripper in the beginning, she never gave up her dream to become a musician and kept on practicing. Surely, her hard work has now been paid off with her being considered as one of the most rising R&B singers in the industry.

Unlike other female singers, Summer opts to be frank in her lyrics and sings in the plain-spoken language that many young ladies use daily in group chats. An example of that was her breakout single "Girls Need Love", which was considered special given the wordplay that she used in her lyrics to convey this idea that women can't really express their sexual desires.

"Summer gives a voice to a certain type of black woman who for so long didn't have a voice," Buzzfeed's Sylvia Obell previously gushed over the singer. "She's the type of girl Drake is always singing about. Guys are always singing about falling in love with a stripper, but we never get that girl's perspective. We never get a girl saying, 'Because I like sex, I'm not wife material?' Summer makes music for us whose relationship status is complicated."

Her debut album, "Over It", was just as good as her breakout single in telling the beguiling tales of dating, sex and love that counter the unbridled lust doled out by male singers. And surely, given how rare it was for a female singer to deliver such things, the album was both critically and commercially successful. It even broke records for the largest streaming week ever for an R&B album by a woman in terms of on-demand audio streams with 154.7 million streams.

Moreover, with 134,000 album units earned, the album marked the biggest week for an R&B album by a female artist in over three years since Beyonce Knowles' "Lemonade" sold 202,000 units in 2016. With such a strong start like that, it was no wonder that Summer managed to snatch Best New Artist accolade at the 2019 Soul Train Music Awards.
