the script is sloppy - repetitive, one-note, overwritten - and the direction, by George Gallo is pedestrian at best and tone-deaf at worst; It's a really strange choice and quite a spectacle, but it's strangely watchable, and the engine of the film
it's a premise that could have produced a few laughs, but the chutzpah that went into Midnight Run has gone missing and everybody -- director and actors -- clearly feel they have to work very hard to make it hang together
a bit corny at times, but there is always some good stuff just around the corner throughout; Robert De Niro has not been this amusing in a humorous setting for many years
