All three filmmakers along with Yorgos Lanthimos and Alexander Payne are up for the top feature film prize at the 76th annual Directors Guild of America Awards.

AceShowbiz - "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" continue to show their strong domination in this year's award season. Having led the pack of the movie nominees at the 2024 SAG Awards, both movies' directors, Greta Gerwig and Christopher Nolan, are nominated for the 76th annual Directors Guild of America Awards.

Gerwig and Nolan are vying for the top prize of Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film. They are in the running for the award along with Martin Scorsese ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Yorgos Lanthimos ("Poor Things") and Alexander Payne ("The Holdovers").

Four out of the five nominees, except for Payne, were also nominated for Best Director at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards which winners were announced in a ceremony on Sunday, January 7. Nolan ended up taking home the accolade for his work on "Oppenheimer", with "Barbie" being the biggest winner that night with 9 trophies.

Celine Song, who was also nominated for Best Director at the Golden Globes for her feature directorial debut "Past Lives", also received nomination for the 76th annual DGA Awards. She is up for Michael Apted Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Theatrical Feature Film, which is also eyed by Cord Jefferson ("American Fiction"), Manuela Martelli ("Chile '76"), Noora Niasari ("Shayda") and A.V. Rockwell ("A Thousand and One").

The DGA is a strong predictor of Oscars, missing the eventual Best Director winner only eight times in 75 years. Last year's DGA winners Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert also bagged an Academy Award for best director for "Everything Everywhere All at Once".

"In a year full of so many extraordinary films, DGA members have nominated an incredible group of gifted storytellers," DGA president Lesli Linka Glatter said in a statement of the nominees. "Their films fused technical prowess with unique artistic visions that captured the depth of the human experience and left an indelible impact on audiences around the world. Congratulations to these superb directors on their well-deserved nominations."

The nominations for the TV and documentary categories were revealed on January 9. The winners will be announced in a ceremony that will take place on February 10 at The Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
