Within Temptation is a prominent Dutch symphonic metal band known for their unique blend of gothic metal and rock, formed in April 1996 by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist Robert Westerholt. Rising to fame with their iconic single "Ice Queen" from the album "Mother Earth" in 2001, the band has garnered significant acclaim in the music industry, celebrated for their musical versatility and innovative experimentation across various genres. By 2016, Within Temptation had sold over 3.5 million albums worldwide, establishing themselves as key players in the international rock scene.

The band's journey began with their debut album "Enter," released in 1997, which showcased their roots in gothic metal and quickly made an impact within the Dutch underground music scene. However, it was not until the release of "Mother Earth" that they caught the attention of the broader public. The success of "Ice Queen," which peaked at No. 2 on the Dutch charts, marked a significant milestone in their career. Following this breakthrough, Within Temptation received the Conamus Exportprijs, a prestigious Dutch music award, for four consecutive years, cementing their status as leading figures in the national music landscape.

As they continued to evolve, Within Temptation released several albums that further solidified their international recognition. "The Silent Force," released in 2004, and "The Heart of Everything," released in 2007, both debuted at No. 1 on the Dutch charts and showcased the band's growing popularity beyond the Netherlands. In 2008, they ventured into the realm of live recordings with "Black Symphony," a remarkable album captured with the Metropole Orchestra, followed by "An Acoustic Night at the Theatre" in 2009, which featured acoustic renditions of their beloved songs.

In 2011, Within Temptation expanded their creative horizons with the release of "The Unforgiving," which was part of a transmedia project that included a comic book series and a series of short films, all contributing to an overarching narrative. This marked a turning point as they began to explore new musical territories outside the traditional symphonic metal framework. Their sixth studio album, "Hydra," released in early 2014, featured a range of collaborations with various artists, showcasing their willingness to experiment with diverse sounds.

By the time they released their seventh studio album, "Resist," in 2019, Within Temptation had fully embraced influences from genres such as industrial and EDM, demonstrating their adaptability in a rapidly changing musical landscape. Most recently, in 2023, they unveiled "Bleed Out," which incorporates elements of metalcore and djent while still paying homage to their gothic metal roots. With a career spanning over two decades, Within Temptation continues to captivate audiences worldwide, solidifying their legacy as one of the most influential bands in the symphonic metal genre.
