Emerging from the industrial town of Fagersta, Sweden, The Hives established themselves as one of the most electrifying and visually distinctive forces in modern garage rock. Formed in 1993 by school friends, the band's unwavering lineup and uniformed aesthetic became hallmarks of their identity, propelling them to international fame in the early 2000s as leaders of the garage rock revival. Known for their explosive, precision-tooled live performances and a string of incendiary singles, The Hives carved out a legacy as one of rock's most reliably thrilling acts.

The core of The Hives—vocalist Howlin' Pelle Almqvist, lead guitarist Nicholaus Arson, rhythm guitarist Vigilante Carlstroem, bassist Dr. Matt Destruction, and drummer Chris Dangerous—crystallized in their teens, bonding over a shared love of raw, energetic rock and roll. Their debut album, Barely Legal, arrived in 1997, garnering attention in their native Sweden. However, it was their explosive second album, 2000's Veni Vidi Vicious, that served as their global breakthrough. The album's lead single, "Hate to Say I Told You So," became an instant classic and their signature song, its swaggering riff and Almqvist's charismatic sneer capturing the attention of critics and a burgeoning international audience. The subsequent compilation Your New Favourite Band efficiently introduced their blistering sound to new fans worldwide.

Capitalizing on this momentum, The Hives became renowned for their dynamic stage shows, where the members performed in matching black-and-white formal wear, with Almqvist acting as a frenetic, commanding ringmaster. This theatrical energy translated onto albums like Tyrannosaurus Hives and The Black and White Album, the latter featuring production work from Pharrell Williams. Their consistency and power were further demonstrated on Lex Hives. The band experienced its first lineup change in 2013 when Dr. Matt Destruction retired, replaced by The Johan and Only on bass. After a lengthy hiatus from recording, The Hives made a triumphant return with 2023's The Death of Randy Fitzsimmons, an album that reaffirmed their potent formula of razor-sharp riffs and infectious arrogance. They continue to tour extensively, celebrated as one of rock's most potent and entertaining live acts, a status solidified by the release of their 2025 album, The Hives Forever Forever The Hives.
