Rage Against the Machine, often abbreviated as RATM, was an influential American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1991. The group consisted of vocalist Zack de la Rocha, bassist and backing vocalist Tim Commerford, guitarist Tom Morello, and drummer Brad Wilk. Known for their unique sound that melded heavy metal, rap, punk rock, and funk with powerful anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist lyrics, Rage Against the Machine carved a distinct niche in the music industry and became a voice for social and political activism.

The band's journey began with the release of their self-titled debut album, "Rage Against the Machine," in 1992. The album was met with critical acclaim and laid the groundwork for their explosive career, showcasing tracks that would become anthems of a generation. The album was later ranked number 368 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time, underscoring its lasting impact. The band's performance at the 1993 Lollapalooza festival significantly boosted their visibility, leading to commercial success and a devoted fanbase.

Following their debut, Rage Against the Machine released "Evil Empire" in 1996 and "The Battle of Los Angeles" in 1999, both of which topped the Billboard 200 chart. The band’s music resonated with a wide audience, and they became pivotal in the rise of the nu metal genre in the late 1990s and early 2000s. They were recognized for their artistic contributions, being ranked No. 33 on VH1's 100 Greatest Artists of Hard Rock and selling over 16 million records worldwide by 2010.

In 2000, the group released "Renegades," a cover album, but soon after, internal tensions led to their disbandment. During their hiatus, the members pursued various projects, with de la Rocha and Morello particularly active in social and political causes. In 2007, Rage Against the Machine reunited for a performance at Coachella, marking their return to the stage and reigniting interest in their music. Over the next four years, they toured extensively, playing at numerous venues and festivals around the world before entering another hiatus in 2011.

In 2019, the band announced a world tour, which was initially set for 2020 but was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour was ultimately cut short after de la Rocha suffered a leg injury during a performance. In 2024, drummer Brad Wilk confirmed that Rage Against the Machine had disbanded for the third time, closing a significant chapter in rock history. Their legacy endures, marked by their passionate music and unwavering commitment to social justice, as they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, a testament to their influential role in the music landscape.
