Bat for Lashes
Bat for Lashes, the artistic persona of Natasha Khan, emerged as one of the most distinctive and critically acclaimed voices in British alternative music in the 21st century. Known for her rich, atmospheric soundscapes, mythologically inspired storytelling, and emotive vocals, she carved a unique path that blended elements of art pop, indie rock, and folktronica. Her breakthrough came with the Mercury Prize-nominated album "Two Suns" in 2009, establishing her as a formidable songwriter and producer with a deeply cinematic vision.
Born in Brighton, England in 1979, Natasha Khan spent part of her childhood in Pakistan before returning to the UK. She studied music and visual arts at the University of Brighton, where she began developing the Bat for Lashes project, initially performing with a small collective of musicians. Her debut album, "Fur and Gold," was released in 2006 to widespread critical praise, earning her a nomination for the Mercury Prize and drawing comparisons to powerful female storytellers like Kate Bush and Björk. The album's haunting singles, such as "What's a Girl to Do?," showcased her talent for pairing intimate lyrical confessions with expansive, percussion-driven arrangements.
The 2009 follow-up, "Two Suns," became her commercial and critical zenith. A concept album exploring dualities through the characters of Khan and her blonde alter-ego Pearl, it featured the hit "Daniel" and a collaboration with Yeasayer. It secured her a second Mercury Prize nomination. She continued to evolve with 2012's "The Haunted Man," which presented a more stripped-back, personal approach and earned her a third Mercury nod. Never one to repeat herself, Khan ventured into darker narrative territory with 2016's "The Bride," a tragic song cycle about a woman whose fiancé dies on their wedding day.
Her collaborative spirit led her to form Sexwitch, a psychedelic rock project with the band Toy and producer Dan Carey, releasing a self-titled album of covers in 2015. In 2019, she returned with "Lost Girls," an '80s-inspired synth-pop record influenced by Los Angeles and films like The Lost Boys. After becoming a mother, she channeled that transformative experience into her sixth studio album, 2024's "The Dream of Delphi," a minimalist and ambient exploration of early motherhood. Across her career, Bat for Lashes has maintained a reputation for fearless artistic exploration, creating immersive worlds that are both deeply personal and universally resonant.
