The Sea of Trees is an upcoming American horror drama film directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Chris Sparling. The film stars Matthew McConaughey, Ken Watanabe, and Naomi Watts. The film is based on the novel of the same name by Sean Carroll, which tells the story of a suicidal man who travels to the Aokigahara Forest in Japan, where he encounters the spirits of other people who have died there. The film was shot in Japan and Vancouver Island, Canada. The Sea of Trees is scheduled to be released in the United States on September 2, 2015.
