Free State of Jones is a 2016 American historical drama film directed by Gary Ross and starring Matthew McConaughey, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Mahershala Ali, Keri Russell, and Brad Carter. The film is based on the true story of Newton Knight, a Confederate soldier and farmer who led a rebellion against the Confederacy in Jones County, Mississippi during the American Civil War. The film was released in the United States on June 24, 2016.
