Midnight Special is an upcoming American science fiction drama film directed by Jeff Nichols, who also wrote the screenplay and co-produced with Tristar Pictures. The film stars Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher, and Sam Shepard. Nichols conceived the idea for the film after watching a documentary on sleepwalking. The film follows a father and son who are on the run from the government after the son develops special powers. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on January 23, 2016, and was released in the United States on March 18, 2016.
