Refusing to help Oscar (Francois Arnaud) with his mysterious plans, Jane (Jaimie Alexander) decides to lay low and distance herself from the FBI. The team decodes another of Jane's tattoos with the help of an anonymous tip - from Oscar, resorting to desperate measures - to discover a sex trafficking ring. Zapata (Audrey Esparza) goes undercover to take down the scheme from the inside, but her plan gets derailed when she's knocked unconscious and the team is unable to track her. After a few harrowing hours, they ultimately save her, and Jane, whose tattoo proved integral to the investigation, remembers her value to the team.
That isn't the only dangerous encounter for Zapata. An Assistant U.S. Attorney explains why her apartment is being bugged. Apparently, a federal prosecutor wants to know why CIA Agent Tom Carter was obsessed with Jane, and what Mayfair's (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) role is. Zapata must choose between delivering intel and serious jail time.
Reade (Rob Brown) reveals to Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) that he loves Weller's sister Sarah (Jordana Spiro), and their relationship isn't ending anytime soon - at least, not if he can help it. After Reade's search for information into Carter's disappearance provokes a masked assailant to attack and kidnap him, his future hangs in the balance.
Meanwhile, Weller distracts himself from Jane by starting a casual relationship with his ex, Allie (Trieste Kelly Dunn). It's a no-strings-attached situation, but could there still be some ties between him and Jane? After Jane tells Oscar her loyalties are with the FBI, he replies that if she's unwilling to participate in their plan, the "bad cops" on their side will kill Weller. So whatever Jane does next, she'll have to pick a side - or risk losing it all.
