After Charlie Napier (Gaius Charles), a soldier previously reported dead, turns up drugged and violent, the FBI works to uncover what happened. Charlie was dosed with ZIP, the same chemical used to erase Jane's (Jaimie Alexander) memory, as well as a cocktail of other drugs to keep him in a constant state of fight or flight. Using Jane's tattoos, the team ultimately pinpoints Northlake Group - they were experimenting on Charlie and others to build the perfect soldier. When Northlake mercenaries recapture Charlie, the FBI tracks down their lab. Resisting, Charlie picks a vicious fight with Jane, so Weller (Sullivan Stapleton) shoots and kills him. Regretting her failure to save Charlie, Jane confronts Weller, who replies, "In this job, there are good guys and there are bad guys - it's not that complicated." Little does he know...
Weller and Jane agree to keep things strictly professional. Meanwhile, he has no idea his sister Sarah (Jordana Spiro) is dating Reade (Rob Brown), and it's starting to get serious... Weller finally decides to ask his father (Jay O. Sanders) what he was really doing the night Jane disappeared. Bill admits he was attempting suicide, and Weller realizes maybe it's time to forgive his troubled father.
Throughout the Napier investigation, Jane has recurring flashbacks of her Navy SEAL training, during which a drill sergeant repeatedly dares her to quit. Once she finally does, he welcomes her to the mysterious Orion project. And speaking of roles to play: Oscar (François Arnaud) gives Jane a mission to swap Mayfair's (Marianne Jean-Baptiste) pen with an exact replica. She switches the pens, and realizes the "mission" was simply a test of loyalty. In return, she asks Oscar to answer her questions, and he confirms the Ruggedly Handsome Man killed in Jane's safe house was on their side, and that Orion was where she "died."
