Critics' Choice Awards 2024: 'Oppenheimer' and 'Beef' Already Score Multiple Wins

Christopher Nolan's biopic nabs Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., Best Acting Ensemble and Best Cinematography, while Steven Yeun is named best actor in a limited series or TV movie for his role on the Netflix show.

AceShowbiz - The Critics Choice Association (CCA) is presenting the 29th Critics' Choice Awards with the winners being announced in a ceremony on Sunday, January 14. Kicking off at 4 P.M. PT, the show already handed out several awards for the finest achievements of filmmaking and television programming in 2023.

While the show is currently underway at at the Santa Monica Airport in Santa Monica, California, the likes of "Oppenheimer" and "Beef" already bagged multiple awards. Christopher Nolan-directed pic won Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., beating out fellow nominees such as Sterling K. Brown ("American Fiction"), Robert De Niro ("Killers of the Flower Moon"), Ryan Gosling ("Barbie"), Charles Melton ("May December") and Mark Ruffalo ("Poor Things").

In his speech, he read off a list of comments by critics about his worst performances in the past. "I was thinking this morning, I love critics. ... You know, they've given me such beautiful feedback, really just so many great moments, and some of it is so poetic," he said onstage. "I just want to share some of their thoughts with you over the years."

"The first one is kind of like Haiku: 'Sloppy, messy and lazy.' The next one is more metaphoric: 'Like Pee-Wee Herman emerging from a coma.' This was from a Brit: 'A puzzling waste of talent.' And lastly, and this one lingered: 'Amusing as a bed-locked fart,' " he read.

He went on to thank his "Oppenhomies," those who worked alongside him on the movie. "Every day of filming was like having my ego's a** handed to me at the door, and I think it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy," he joked.

The epic biopic scored a second award that night for Best Cinematography for Hoyte van Hoytema. Later, the cast of the movie was honored with the Best Acting Ensemble award, while Ludwig Goransson nabbed Best Score trophy for his work on the movie.

"Barbie" was another big winner, being named Best Comedy in addition to winning Best Original Screenplay for Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach, Best Costume Design for Jacqueline Durran as well as Best Song for "I'm Just Ken", sung by Ryan Gosling.

"The Holdovers" won two already, Best Supporting Actress for Da'Vine Joy Randolph and Best Young Actor/Actress for Dominic Sessa. Meanwhile, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" was chosen as Best Animated Feature.

In the TV field, "Beef" and "The Bear" currently lead the winner list. The Netflix series nabbed three acting awards, for Steven Yeun (Best Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television), Ali Wong (Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television) and Maria Bello (Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television).

FX/Hulu's series "The Bear", meanwhile, won Best Actor in a Comedy Series for Jeremy Allen White, Best Actress in a Comedy Series for Ayo Edebiri and Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

Meryl Streep won Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role on "Only Murders in the Building", and Jonathan Bailey received Best Supporting Actor in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television his performance on "Fellow Travelers".

The CCA also honored Harrison Ford with Career Achievement Award, while America Ferrera was presented with Seeher Award. More winners will be announced in the show which is hosted by Chelsea Handler.
