AceShowbiz - Awkwafina's acting career is set to soar even higher following the success of "Crazy Rich Asians" and "Ocean's 8". The actress/rapper is reportedly in final talks to join the sequel to "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" that starred Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart among others. The Hollywood Reporter is the first to break the news.
Details about her character are still kept tightly under wraps. However, the site states that she will be playing a "key" and "significant" character. Should she close the deal, Awkwafina, whose real name Nora Lum, will be the first new cast member to be added for the new flick.
It arrives after the actress had a breakout in 2018 for her appearances in "Ocean's 8" and "Crazy Rich Asians". The latter movie was a huge phenomenon back in the summer as it grossed $174 million domestically. Her success also scored her a hosting gig on "Saturday Night Live".
The planned sequel of "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" is said to be based on the picture book by Chris Van Allsburg. Jake Kasdan, who helmed the hit 2017 movie, is set to return to his directorial duty in addition to providing the script. Also working on the script alongside Kasdan are Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, whose credits also include the previous outing. Matt Tolmach will produce along with Johnson's Seven Bucks banner and Kasdan.
Based on 1995 movie "Jumanji", "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" was a smash hit after being released on December 20, 2017. Also starring Jack Black, Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas, it made $962 million in worldwide market. The movie follows four teenagers who are transported into the video game world of Jumanji and play as their chosen characters. Johnson, Hart, Black and Gillan are expected to return for the sequel.
