Ali's detective character looks back to an old case as the scenes go back and forth between the past and present.

AceShowbiz - HBO has released the first trailer for "True Detective" season 3 starring Mahershala Ali. The video shows the Oscar-winning actor's character, Arkansas state police detective Wayne Hays, at three different ages as he looks back to an old case that is haunting him.

"Before you ever knew me, I wasn't scared much. That wasn't a fear for me. Things I've seen, things I know, wouldn't do anything but cause harm," he says in voiceover, while the scenes go back and forth between the past and present. "My whole brain's a bunch of missing pieces."

"Did you think you could just go on, and never once have to look back?" a woman says to him. He then continues, "My job.... there's no certainty. This peace... is more haunting than anything. I want to know the whole story."
