The two-minute footage introduces the Oscar winner's Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas.

AceShowbiz - HBO's "True Detective" has unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming third season starring Oscar winner Mahershala Ali ("Moonlight"). The new season is giving fans some insight into the plot in the new season of the anthology crime drama.

The two-minute footage introduces Ali's Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. He's seen investigating the 1980 case in which two seven-year-old kids disappeared on their way home from school. It appears that the unsolved case will be his last. "It was just a case when I got it. I didn't know it'd be my last," Hays says.

Him being unable to solve the case seemingly haunts him for years as he can be seen still lingering after the case in multiple time periods. "My whole brain is a bunch of missing pieces," he says somewhere else in the trailer. "Things I've seen, things I know, wouldn't do anything but cause harm. This case is all I can think of, I want to know the whole story."

Judging by the trailer, season 3 seemingly will offer a throwback to its previous seasons. In addition to following investigation of the crime in multiple timelines, it will feature the emotional and psychological price that needs to be paid in order to put the case to the rest.

Also starring in season 3 of "True Detective" is Stephen Dorff ("Blade") as Hays' partner Roland West, an Arkansas State Investigator whose career has been influenced by a baffling crime Arkansas. He is joined by Ray Fisher ("Justice League") who plays Wayne's son, and Carmen Ejogo ("Selma") who plays Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher.

Written by series creator Nic Pizzolatto who also directed the season alongside Jeremy Saulnier and Daniel Sackheim, season 3 of "True Detective" premieres on January 13 on HBO.
