Colin Trevorrow Reacts to Petition to Kick Him Off 'Star Wars Episode IX'
Movie

Thinking it's funny, the director vowed to follow on George Lucas' foosteps by presenting something that people would think 'crazy' at first.

AceShowbiz - Some people don't agree that Colin Trevorrow should direct "Star Wars Episode IX" and he thought "it's funny". The "Jurassic World" helmer has responded to the petition to throw him overboard in favor of George Lucas.

A petition was created by someone named Yuri Luiz and sent to Disney, Lucasfilm, and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy via Change.org. "Bring back George Lucas for the Star Wars movies. Put the father of the franchise as director of Episode IX. We really want this, please . We have no problem with Colin Trevorrow , but he's not the right guy to direct Star Wars Episode IX," the petition read.

"George Lucas as director of Episode IX would be the perfect way to end this new trilogy and make an epic farewell between the Father of Star Wars and the whole universe of the galaxy far, far away...We would like to see him again involved with the franchise. Thank you so much." It had garnered more than 20,000 signatures since it was launched a week ago.

But Trevorrow is not backing out. "It's funny, I saw that, and it was on a day where I was at Lucasfilm giving this big speech to everyone about how we want to channel the invention and just the raw creativity and the boldness that George brought to these films, and not being afraid that we're going to embarrass ourselves by doing something that might be crazy," he told ET.

He tried to take a page out of Lucas' experience, saying "When George Lucas made Star Wars, a lot of people thought it was crazy. When you try to pitch what that movie's about - if you've never heard of Star Wars before, you say, 'Here's a character. His father's part robot, but he can also do magic. And there's a guy who can fly in a spaceship. He's got a dog for a friend!' - it sounds insane. But it's the greatest story ever told. I just want to embrace that kind of invention and creativity that he brought to it."

Trevorrow also made necessary measures to make sure he went to the right direction. One of them was working with "Star Wars Episode VIII" director Rian Johnson. "A story must evolve or perish," Trevorrow said. "Rian and I are working closely together, to make sure that our stories build off of each other and continue to evolve and take us to new places. I think that's what the fans expect and what they want."

"Star Wars: Episode IX" will be released in theaters May 2019, two years after "Episode VIII" is scheduled to hit theaters.
