The R-rated horror follows a story of a family who moves to the edge of an impassible wilderness where they experience many unfortunate events.

AceShowbiz - The first trailer for Robert Eggers' horror thriller "The Witch" has been released. Set in the 17th century, the film highlights some terrifying tragedies which happen to a family who has just moved to a homestead area.

The two-minute video opens with William (Ralph Ineson) and Katherine (Kate Dickie), along with their five children, moving to New England to start a new life. Shortly after they settle in the new place, some frightening tragic events happen. Their newborn son mysteriously disappears, their crop fails and their animals are possessed by the demonic spirits. Filled with fear and dread, the family begins to turn on one another.

The movie is told through the eyes of Thomasin (Anya Taylor-Joy), the teenage daughter blamed for the disappearance of the infant. Like other horror movies have in common, "The Witch" also presents the scenes of exorcism.

Earlier this year, the movie premiered at Cannes Film Festival and received positive reviews. The film which will mark Eggers' directorial debut has no exact release date just yet, but it is expected to have a limited release in the U.S. in 2016.

According to the official synopsis, "The Witch is a chilling portrait of a family unraveling within their own fears and anxieties, leaving them prey for an inescapable evil."
