The family said that they'd been working with Nevada-based tech company Acrovirt LLC to create "a walking, talking, singing, and dancing, digital embodiment" of Selena for the project called "Selena the One."

"Acrovirt is working in collaboration with Selena's immediate family and cutting-edge scientists to enable new productions for her many fans," they wrote and added that the Selena hologram was expected to "release new songs and videos, will collaborate with current hit artists, and aims to go on tour in 2018."

Selena was killed by her former employee and friend Yolanda Saldivar in 1995. She was 23. The announcement regarding the Selena hologram has drawn mixed reactions from fans. Some of them are excited while others think the whole thing would be creepy.

"So they're working on a hologram concert of Selena. count me in," a Twitter user wrote. Another user had a different opinion, saying, "A Selena hologram is in the works. That's just creepy. The Tupac hologram gave me chills. Let them rest."

Responding to the reactions, Selena's family explained the project in an interview with Billboard. "By no means is this something that's creepy or weird," the late star's sister Suzette said. "We think it's something amazing. A lot of the new fans that did not get to experience what Selena was about hopefully will be able to get a sense of her with this new technology that's going to be coming out."

She went on saying that the project wasn't about replacing Selena. "It's just something to help her legacy continue growing," she explained.
