Selena Gomez Confirmed to Play Linda Ronstadt in Biopic

Ronstadt's official social media pages post a news story about the casting hours after the 'Only Murders in the Building' actress shares a picture of the singer/songwriter's 2013 memoir.

AceShowbiz - Selena Gomez is going to channel her inner rocker in her upcoming big screen project. The 31-year-old actress/singer has been attached to star as Linda Ronstadt in a biopic about the 77-year-old singer/songwriter.

Confirming the news, the official social media pages of Ronstadt posted Variety's article about the news of the "Wolves" singer's casting. Along with the headline which read, "Selena Gomez to Play Linda Ronstadt in New Biopic," a caption read, "It all started with a simple dream."

Rolling Stone first reported the news after Gomez shared on her Instagram Story on Tuesday, January 9 a picture of Ronstadt's 2013 memoir titled "Simple Dreams". "Simple Dreams" is also the name of Ronstadt's 1977 album that has been certified platinum.

The "Only Murders in the Building" actress has been teasing her involvement in the project for a while via social media. She once shared the "Simple Dreams" cover art and a throwback picture of the rock star. She also shared a quote by the iconic singer, "The smell of the carpet in a hotel room is the same everywhere."

Gomez and Ronstadt, who are both of Mexican descent, previously met at the musician's home to discuss the project, according to a note on the website for Ronstadt's manager John Boylan's company Great Eastern Music.

Boylan and James Keach ("Walk the Line") are producing the upcoming biopic. Keach previously directed 2022's documentary short "Linda and the Mockingbirds" and produced a 2019 documentary about the singer's life, titled "Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice".

A director and additional cast members for the biopic have yet to be announced. The news came in light of Gomez's appearance at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards, where she was nominated for Best Actress in a Television Series - Musical or Comedy for her role as Mabel Mora on Hulu's "Only Murders in the Building". She, however, lost the award to Ayo Edebiri for "The Bear".

Ronstadt is a 11-time Grammy winner who has released 24 studio albums and the No. 1 hit "You're No Good" during her decades-spanning music career. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April 2014 and was feted during the 2019 Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime achievement.

She announced her retirement from singing in 2011 due to a degenerative condition initially diagnosed as Parkinson's disease but later determined to be progressive supranuclear palsy. She continued to make public appearances, going on a number of public speaking tours in the 2010s.
