Farrell is reported to be a frontrunner to play Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme alongside Keanu Reeves and Benedict Cumberbatch.

AceShowbiz - The list of contenders to play Dr. Strange in Marvel's upcoming movie continues to grow. The latest addition to the casting mix is Colin Farrell. The actor who is set to play one of the key characters in the second season of HBO's "True Detective" reportedly becomes one of the frontrunners to lead the film.

TheWrap learns Marvel is also paying attention to fans' demand, considering to hire Keanu Reeves who has been one of geeks' favorites since Joaquin Phoenix dropped out of negotiations. On top of that, the latest report suggests long-rumored candidate Benedict Cumberbatch remains high on the studio's list.

Other actors in contention to play the coveted role include Oscar Isaac, Jared Leto, Ethan Hawke, Ewan McGregor, Jake Gyllenhaal and Matthew McConaughey. Phoenix's name actually appeared again in the casting mix, but his publicist insists the talks are "dead dead dead." His rep says, "A couple of weeks ago they mutually decided to part ways. It was over before the New York Film Festival."

"Dr. Strange" is slated for July 8, 2016 release in the U.S. Marvel's head Kevin Feige once said the film would be the "doorway" to enter the supernatural side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scott Derrickson ("Sinister", "Deliver Us from Evil") will serve behind the lens.
