Words are, the script for the second season has been delivered and it has one male lead with male/female co-stars.

AceShowbiz - After rumor of Jessica Chastain's casting was debunked, a new report on "True Detective" season 2 has emerged. Contrary to what series creator Nic Pizzolatto had said that the next installment would feature three lead characters, The Wrap has learnt that the second season will have only one male lead.

"#TrueDetective Twitter EXCLU: The 1st script for 2nd season is IN & agency sources tell us it features one MALE lead & male/female co-stars," so the site posted on its Twitter account Friday, June 27.

Back in May, Pizzolatto said, "Right now, we're working with three leads," which are all new characters. He added, "It takes place in California - not Los Angeles, but some of the much lesser known venues of California - and we're going to try to capture a certain psychosphere ambiance of the place, much like we did in season one."

After reports ran rampant about Chastain's possible involvement, he said earlier this month, "Literally, not a single rumour about casting that has been printed anywhere has any truth to it whatsoever." He also clarified, "There is a strong (lead) female character. But I wouldn't say it is female-led or anything like that."

On the storyline, Pizzolatto coyly shared that the second installment would focus on "hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."

The first season of the HBO anthology series stars Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson as two detectives, who are the lead characters. McConaughey initially said he wouldn't return for the second season, but he later said that he'd "be open to doing another one" because he liked "the whole series and the experience of making it."
