When announcing the project, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman teases the 'Cabin in the Woods' helmer's new idea for the upcoming fifth installment of the sci-fi film franchise.

AceShowbiz - Warner Bros. is set to re-enter "The Matrix" with a new person leading the charge. A new and fifth installment of the sci-fi action film series is currently in the works with Drew Goddard on board to serve behind the lens.

Announcing the project on Wednesday, April 3, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman praised Goddard's "vision" for the continuation of the fan-favorite lore. "Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters," Ehrman said in a statement to the press.

He added, "The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis' spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio."

Meanwhile, Goddard shared, "It is not hyperbole to say 'The Matrix' films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world."

"The Matrix 5" will mark the first film in the franchise without a Wachowski at the helm. The Wachowski siblings directed the original trilogy, which started with the first film in 1999. Lana Wachowski later returned to direct the fourth film, "The Matrix Resurrections" (2021), solo without her sister Lilly Wachowski.

Lana Wachowski will still be involved in the new installment as executive producer. Goddard will also pen the script and produce with his Goddard Textiles partner, Sarah Esberg. Cast for the upcoming film has not been confirmed. The most recent installment saw the return of franchise stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss, with Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jonathan Groff, Neil Patrick Harris and Priyanka Chopra Jonas joining the cast.
