The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural drama television series developed by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec, based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith. The series premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009, and has aired eight seasons. The show follows the lives of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a young woman who falls in love with two vampire brothers, Stefan (Paul Wesley) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder), after her parents' deaths. The series also features the lives of Elena's friends and family, including her brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), her best friend Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham), and her love interest Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig).
