After Alan destroys Walden's toaster and nearly burns the house down, Walden insists that Alan replace the appliance. Alan buys a cheap toaster instead, which ignites a heated argument between the two and leads to Alan's hasty threat to move out. When Walden agrees that he should leave, Alan tries his luck staying with Lyndsey but is met with rejection and Herb waiting in the wings. Alan ends up staying with Herb but is put off by his oddities while Walden finds himself bored and lonely. Herb picks up the phone when Walden tries calling Alan to hang out and doesn't relay the message to him. Eventually, Walden goes over to talk to Alan in person and the truth comes out that Herb was blocking Walden from Alan because of his own loneliness. They reconcile and Alan moves back in with Walden while Herb inserts himself in the picture and clings to their friendship.
