Even though she and Hector have remained distant since the incident at his birthday party, Connie continues to daydream about Hector and the kiss they once shared. Her friend and classmate Ritchie notices, and while eating at a diner he reveals that not only is he aware of her secret relationship, but he managed to snap photographic evidence of every moment at the barbecue - including her private moment with Hector and the slap that followed.

At home, after surviving a dinner with her mom Vivian and step-father Tony, Connie secludes herself in her room with a shoebox of old photos - each one featuring the same young individual she barely knew as her real father. Although she remembers the day Vivian whisked her away in the middle of the night never to see her father again, Connie knows little else about the mythical musician.

Later, she and Ritchie team up to babysit Hugo at Rosie and Gary's loft, only to fail at a baking experiment once the parents return home. Gary and Rosie invite them to make a night of it and they all watch an old movie together. Gary mentions an art opening of his, and Ritchie attempts to disinvite Connie, knowing that she might seize the opportunity to sneak in time with Hector. Either way, Connie returns home to a barrage of questions - and discovers that the police visited eager to learn Connie's perspective on the slap.

Meanwhile, Aisha demands Hector attend Gary's opening even though her work calls her in for an emergency, which leads to Hector and Connie texting each other to confirm their attendance at the art show. Just as Ritchie predicted, Connie blows off his party invitation for a chance to see Hector... and when they meet, she presses the issue of them speaking alone. They share a cigarette outside and Connie reveals exactly how she feels, how she believes they have something special - but Hector stops her short. He rejects her advance and slams shut every ounce of hope for a future romance. Heart broken, Connie exits in a huff.

She ends up at Ritchie's party with an aim for self-destruction - she drinks heavy and fast, already drunk by the time she finds Ritchie. Her emotions overcome her and she attempts to seduce him, but he sees through her state and gently ends it. She confesses her true driving force - Hector's "lie" - and Ritchie makes sure she arrives safely home.

The next day, Tony surprises Connie with a handwritten letter from a "close friend" of her father's named Malcolm - a letter Vivian wanted to keep away from her daughter. Connie soon ropes Ritchie into an impromptu visit to the mystery man's house outside the city. They meet Malcolm, and he brings them to a room bursting with memories from her father - albums, instruments, notes and novels. It's a treasure trove of items, although none compares to the revelation that he and Malcolm were lovers. And that he loved Connie dearly.

Connie visits a saddened Rosie later at the loft, who contemplates the impending trial, now a certainty after a judge-led conference ended in a stalemate between both sides. Rosie informs Connie that Hugo will undergo a psychological evaluation led by Harry's attorney. The mother's frankness and vulnerability spur Connie to spill a secret that could change the course of the trial - that Ritchie has photos of every minute from the barbecue. This causes Rosie to leap to her feet with joy and hug Connie tightly, now supplanted with the evidence she believes will secure victory.
