Still reeling from the haunting message scrawled across Spencer's vanity, the next morning the girls discover an additional, even spookier message from "A" - this one in the form of a video that was clearly recording them from the vantage of Spencer's closet. As a penance for crashing Sean's car, Hanna is forced to take a filing job in his mom's office; there, she discovers that Jenna has been seeing a psychiatrist in the same building. After finding out that Sean's been hanging out with another pretty little blonde, Hanna decides to keep close tabs on Sean by joining his abstinence club at school, "Real Love Waits." There, she finds a surprising ally in the equally reluctant Lucas, a nerd that was a former target of Alison's taunts.

Spencer gets asked by her father to participate in a doubles tournament at the Hastings' country club, but what seems like an olive branch turns out to be nothing but a business venture: he wants to hand the win to their opponents, a potential business partner, thus signing the dotted line. After an argument with her father, she finds a fast, unlikely friend in Alex (Diego Boneta), a boy that works at the country club.

Meanwhile, Emily and Toby's surprising friendship grows even stronger, as both begin to take an interest in each other, and Toby decides to make Emily a mix tape, much to the dismay of a suspicious Jenna. Ezra agrees to let Aria see a reading of his at an "open mic" night, but is surprised to find that his old college friend Hardy (Patrick Adams) is in attendance as well. Hardy is quick to pick up on Aria and Ezra's scandalous relationship, warning Ezra that it could bring him more harm than good down the line. When Aria leaves her phone at Ezra's overnight, he intercepts a message from "A" - and, assuming it's a friend of Aria's she's confided in about their affair, quickly puts a stop to their relationship indefinitely.

Aria soon realizes she has more personal matters to deal with: with her parents at each others' throats over Byron's infidelity, her younger brother Mike feels more vulnerable than ever as their house quickly becomes a broken home.
