McDermott has been open about how his battle with addiction heavily impacted his marriage to Tori Spelling, which ended in separation in June 2023 after nearly 18 years and five children together. In interviews, he has detailed how his excessive drinking and prescription drug use created a destructive lifestyle that isolated him from his family.
"Alcohol made me feel good enough until it got to a point where it didn't - I ended up in isolation," he shared. "It ended up with me drinking a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and a handful of narcos by myself with a beautiful family in the other room."
Despite the personal struggle and the toll it took on his family, McDermott's story is not one of defeat but of hope and resilience. Now a drug and alcohol counselor himself, he uses his story to encourage others facing similar struggles.
