The Danish soccer player will be fitted with a battery-powered heart starter after he suffered a cardiac arrest during Euro 2020 game between his home country and Finland.

AceShowbiz - Danish soccer star Christian Eriksen is set to be fitted with a device to monitor his heartbeat after suffering a cardiac arrest during his country's opening Euro 2020 game last weekend.

The midfielder had to be resuscitated with a defibrillator after collapsing during Denmark's game against Finland on 12 June (21), and he was subsequently rushed to a nearby hospital, where his condition was stabilised.

Now team doctors have revealed Eriksen will undergo surgery for a battery-powered heart starter, known as an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), which will automatically send an electric shock to normalise the heart rate if an abnormal beat is detected.

In a statement, Doctor Morten Boesen explained, "After Christian has been through different heart examinations it has been decided that he should have an ICD (heart starter). This device is necessary after a cardiac attack due to rhythm disturbances."

"Christian has accepted the solution...," he continued. "We encourage everybody to give Christian and his family peace and privacy (at) the following time (sic)."

The health crisis has put 29-year-old Eriksen's future career in doubt although the Inter Milan star isn't the first soccer player to have an ICD implanted - Dutch sportsman Daley Blind has continued as a defender for his club, Ajax, and country after he was diagnosed with an inflamed heart muscle in 2019.

The update was released on Thursday (17Jun21), shortly before Denmark's Euro 2020 game against Belgium, which was paused at the 10-minute mark as a nod to Eriksen's team number, in tribute to the athlete, who remains in a Copenhagen hospital.
