Mahon, who suffered from partial paralysis in his left arm after a childhood battle with polio, began his acting career onstage in plays like Jason Miller's "Nobody Hears a Broken Drum" before establishing himself onscreen, often taking on law enforcement or military roles.

On TV, he made appearances in "MacGyver", "Knots Landing", "The Rockford Files", "Hill Street Blues", and "St. Elsewhere", as well as "The X-Files", "Frasier", and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", while his film credits included "L.A. Confidential", "Armageddon", "One False Move", "The People Under the Stairs", "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me", and "Zodiac".
