Grubman Shire Meiselas and Sacks, whose clients include a number of high-profile stars, admits that its site has been compromised by hackers who demand $21 million.

AceShowbiz - Personal data of top-notch stars is in danger of being leaked online after hackers targeted a law firm which represents A-list celebrities like Lady GaGa, Drake and Nicki Minaj. As much as 756 gigabytes of data including contracts and personal emails have been stolen from the Grubman Shire Meiselas & Sacks after hackers compromised the site of the law firm.

"We can confirm that we've been victimized by a cyberattack," a rep for the firm said in a statement. "We have notified our clients and our staff. We have hired the world's experts who specialize in this area, and we are working around the clock to address these matters."

The criminals allegedly have shared images of a contract for Madonna's World Tour 2019-20 and threatened to release to public more personal data of the firm's clients, if they don't get paid the $21 million they are demanding. Sources said on Tuesday, May 12 the FBI has opened an investigation.

U2, The Weeknd, Lil Nas X, LeBron James, Mike Tyson, Priyanka Chopra, Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Spike Lee are among other celebrity clients of the law firm. The Daily Beast additionally reports that the film has represented companies including HBO, EMI Music Group, MTV, Playboy Enterprises, Spotify and many others.

The hackers, reportedly known as REvil or Sodinokibi, previously attacked foreign exchange company Travelex with ransonware in January. Ransonware is a malicious type of software that encrypts data until a ransom is paid, usually in untraceable crypto-currency Bitcoin.

Brett Callow, threat analyst at Cyber-security company Emsisoft, weighed in on the situation, "Companies in this position have no good options available to them. Non-payment of the demand will result in the information being published; payment will simply get them a pinky promise from criminals that the stolen data will be deleted."

"These incidents are becoming increasingly commonplace and increasingly concerning," he added. "And incidents involving law firms are even more concerning due to the sensitivity of the data they hold."
