Through The Billy Joel Foundation, the 'Uptown Girl' hitmaker hopes to 'aid the current shortage and the limited availability families are currently experiencing' in his East End neighbourhood.

AceShowbiz - Billy Joel has joined the list of stars helping the less fortunate during the coronavirus crisis by providing meals to his neighbours in Long Island, New York.

The "Uptown Girl" hitmaker's The Billy Joel Foundation has teamed with Long Island Cares charity bosses for the venture, announcing the partnership on Twitter on Tuesday, April 07.

Joel has teamed up with the company founded by singer Harry Chapin in the past and he has helped charity chiefs stock food pantries and soup kitchens across Long Island for the past decade.

Joel shared that he and his staff have also purchased freezer units and additional equipment, which will be set up in his East End neighbourhood as part of the effort.

"The new equipment will service the entire East End and will now allow for transport of perishables and frozen goods to the East End pantries and soup kitchens," he added. "We are hopeful this will aid the current shortage and the limited availability families are currently experiencing."

The musician is the latest star to provide meals for those hit hard by the deadly disease. Steven Spielberg and Jessica Chastain have donated food to those affected by the coronavirus pandemic, while Oprah Winfrey has donated $10 million (£8 million) to various COVID-19 efforts, including to America's Food Fund charity.
