The HBO Max series, which is based on the DC series from Brian Wood, will team the "Selma" filmmaker with showrunner and writer Roberto Patino.

Set in the near future, the story centres on a dystopian America entrenched in a brutal civil war.

The series marks DuVernay's second comic book project - she is currently developing a film version of Jack Kirby's "The New Gods".

Comic book fan Dawson is also no stranger to page-to-screen projects, having previously starred in Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's adaptation of the graphic novel "Sin City" and the Marvel shows "Daredevil", "Iron Fist", "The Defenders", and "Luke Cage" for Netflix.
