Artist of the Week: Roddy Ricch

The success of both his song 'The Box' and album 'Please Excuse Me for Being Autosocial' has even gotten big stars like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez flustered.

AceShowbiz - Roddy Ricch was a comparatively unknown Compton rapper when he first started out, but now he has even managed to get the likes of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez begging people to stream their own music. He has now become a successful rising rap star thanks to his breakout single "The Box" which went viral on TikTok.

"The Box" was not even an official single off Ricch's debut album "Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial", but it quickly made a huge impact on the app and streaming services. The song has garnered more than 100 million streams so far on Spotify in addition to ruling Billboard's Hot 100. By doing so, he beat a strong contender, Justin's "Yummy", despite the Canadian star's effort to make his comeback single top the weekly chart.

Not only the track, but his album was also well-received by the public. "Please Excuse Me for Being Antisocial" debuted at No. 1 on Billboard 200 chart, which was such an amazing feat considering that it was merely his debut album. It even scared the heck out of Selena Gomez, because her album "Rare" and Roddy's album were neck in neck for the No. 1 spot on the weekly chart. This even prompted the songstress to beg fans to stream the album in addition to buying the effort herself, something that she rarely does.

Of course, his current success is not without hard work. Dallas Martin, Senior Vice President of A&R at Atlantic Records, said of the rapper, "He came by the studio, and off the rip, you could tell that he was super focused on music. He did like three records the first day. I was like, 'Oh wow he's focused.' I've never seen an artist just come in here off the bat and record so many records without having any excuses."

He continued, "Roddy had a vision for what he wanted to do, he knew what he wanted to accomplish, and he knew what he wanted his sound to be like. I could just tell that he really had it. He knew what he wanted to do."
