AceShowbiz - The 77th annual Golden Globes took place on Sunday night, January 5 with Ricky Gervais reprising his role as the host for the award-giving event. With Ricky hosting the show once again, that only meant that people had to go through his awkward opening monologue. Tom Hanks, who was among the attendees, apparently wasn't particularly good in maintaining poker face.
That night, Ricky jokingly called out pretty much everyone in the room. He started with talking about Apple's decision to launch a streaming service this year. When the camera panned at Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, he looked visibly nervous.
"Apple roared into the TV game with 'The Morning Show'," Ricky said during his monologue. "A superb drama about the importance of dignity and doing the right thing, made by a company that runs sweatshops in China."
Directing to the stars attending the event, Ricky continued, "Well, you say you're woke, but the companies you work for...unbelievable. Apple, Amazon, Disney. If ISIS started a streaming service, you would call your agent, wouldn't you?"
"So if you do win an award tonight, don't use it as a platform to make a political speech, right?" You're in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg," Ricky doubled down. "So, if you win, come up, accept your little award, thank your agent and your god, and--," he said before NBC cut his mic off.
At that time, Tom appeared on the screen. He looked totally uncomfortable as he pursed his lips while showing off grimace over Ricky's speech. It didn't take long before the picture of the "Forrest Gump" actor's priceless facial expression became a viral meme on Twitter, leading his name to trend on the site.
"When your parents yell at your siblings #TomHanks," one user wrote alongside the meme. Meanwhile, another one liked Tom's reaction to "how we all feel in class."
Someone else added, "Tom hanks was 100% NOT enjoying @rickygervais hosting the #GoldenGlobes and it's concerning to me."
