The former 'Doctor Who' star was worried that she might turn down his proposal after she got upset for having to open layers of boxes to get to the engagement ring.

AceShowbiz - David Tennant almost messed up proposing to his wife Georgia Moffett, as he tried to pop the question using Christmas presents.

Georgia's birthday falls on Christmas Day, and so the former "Doctor Who" star decided one year to make the day even more special by asking her to marry him.

However, he feared for a moment she might turn him down after she became annoyed at having to struggle through layers of wrapping paper to get to the engagement ring he had bought her.

"I wrapped up a big box in Christmas paper and there was another box inside that and another inside that," David tells U.K. chat show host Jonathan Ross. "She didn't get it. It was weird. She was going through (the boxes) by box 10, she still hadn't figured out what I was doing. It was great, she opened the last box and it worked, she said 'Yes' thankfully!"

Now the couple, who married in 2011, have five kids, with ages ranging from 17 years old to just two months, Georgia's birthday celebrations have taken a backseat - so the Scottish actor celebrates with her when the children are all in bed.

"Christmas is about the kids," he explains. "We stay up just past midnight on Christmas Day when all the kids are in bed and we'll have a five minute birthday celebration... Then you're like, the kids are going to get up in 20 minutes so we need to get some sleep!"
