Becoming the first openly gay to compete in the beauty pageant, Swe Zin Htet believes her decision to come out 'will have a big impact on the LGBTQ community back in Burma.'

AceShowbiz - Miss Myanmar Swe Zin Htet has made history by becoming the first openly gay Miss Universe pageant contestant.

The beauty has come out ahead of the competition, which airs on Sunday night (December 08), revealing she and Burmese singer Gae Gae have been dating for three years.

"I have that platform that, if I say that I'm a lesbian, it will have a big impact on the LGBTQ community back in Burma," Miss Myanmar tells People. "The difficult thing is that in Burma, LGBTQ people are not accepted... they are looked down on by other people and are being discriminated against."

Calling her big reveal "a new chapter in life," the beauty queen reveals her parents did not accept the fact she was gay when she first told them the news.

"At first, they were mad," she says. "They didn't accept me. But later, when they found out more about the LGBTQ community, they started to accept me."
