The former member of Fifth Harmony says in a magazine interview that she hopes to follow in the footsteps of legends like Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and Whitney Houston.

AceShowbiz - Normani was determined to make her "Motivation" video "as black as possible" because she's sick of the "so white" pop music industry.

The 23-year-old singer dropped the video back in August, and showed off her incredible dance moves in the clip. Normani discussed her hopes for the video in an interview with America's Cosmopolitan magazine, admitting she'd given the director specific instructions for what she wanted.

"I told the director, 'I want this to be as black as possible,' " she told the publication. "I was like, 'let's show black culture. Why does pop music have to be so white? Why don't we make it a little bit more me?' "

Now she's launched her solo career after Fifth Harmony came to an end, Normani is hoping to follow in the footsteps of stars including Diana Ross, Tina Turner, and Whitney Houston.

"Those women before me, I wanna finish what they started," she smiled. "I'm gonna make whatever I do black. You'll know that I'm a black girl, even if it's on the quote unquote 'whitest record ever.' "

Normani also discussed how she's found her confidence since her Fifth Harmony days, and how she used to hide behind her bandmates during her time in the group.

"I'm not sure what that turning point was, but I was like, 'Normani is enough. You can be on-stage and perform and you can be enough,' " she said.
