AceShowbiz - "Cats" star Francesca Hayward has hit out of criticism of the computer effects used to give its cast a feline appearance.
A new trailer for Tom Hooper's adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical dropped on Tuesday, November 19, and the reaction on social media reinforced the negative reception the film's first teaser received in July.
Critics of the trailer have called its effects "unnerving" as special effects have been used to recreate the half-human half-cat appearance actors take on when performing the play on stage.
In response to the criticism, ballet dancer Francesca, who plays Victoria the White Cat, tells London's Evening Standard newspaper, "It takes time maybe, for people to wrap their heads around the whole thing. Maybe they are comments from people who haven't seen the musical."
However, she does admit that she was initially a little unnerved herself when she saw herself in feline form.
"When I saw the trailer, I hadn't seen myself with fur yet," she continues. "We recorded in the motion capture suits and the fur was digitally added. It took me a while to process myself as a cat - it's not something you see every day."
Another element that has raised eyebrows among fans is the unusual sets - which feature oversized furniture for its cast to get catty on.
Explaining how amazing acting on the sets was, she adds, "If they had been on the sets themselves, (they would've seen) they were absolutely extraordinary. It was like a playground for us. We really did feel cat-sized compared to everything we were seeing and everything that was around us."
