AceShowbiz - Alicia Keys expressed her frustrations with labels and stereotypes in a new video posted on her Instagram. The 38-year-old mother of two wrote on the caption, "Less Labels, More Expressions. Been thinking about how over labeled and over judged we all are... can u feel me??"
Meanwhile, the R&B singer shared in the video a story of her recent visit to nail salon with her four-year-old son Genesis. She revealed that the little boy was initially excited to get his nails painted with rainbow color but then second guessed his decision for fear of being judged.
"Can you believe this?" the wife of music producer Swizz Beatz said to her online followers as she lamented. "Four years old. He's four and he already understands the concept that someone's gonna judge him because he chose rainbow color on his nails."
She encouraged her son to stick with his original decision while praising him for his amazing creativity. "You chose it, you like it, you do it," she said before telling him that a lot of men painted their nails too. "It's not like some strange thing that you only do," she added.
"That made him feel better," she said. "But it just got me to thinking how completely judged we are all the time. The way I see it, there is masculine and feminine energies inside of us all and that's period. That's how it is. And it gets concerning to me that we can't just explore these different sides of ourselves."
"Even for me myself, I oftentimes express the masculine energy that's inside of me. And it's very natural to me. That's how I feel," she continued. Annoyed by all the judgment, stereotypes, and rules, she concluded, "We should be able to explore and express them however we want to."
