Movie

The 'Baby Driver' actor voices a middle-school band teacher who, after scoring a gig as a jazz musician, lands in a cosmic realm where his soul has to carry on a mission in order to return to Earth.

AceShowbiz - "Soul", the latest project made in collaboration between Disney and Pixar, has had its first teaser trailer released for viewing pleasure. The video urges viewers to pursue their true passions as Jamie Foxx's character says in voiceover, "We only have a short time on this planet. You wanna become the person that you were born to be? Don't waste your time on all the junk of life. Spend your precious hours doing what will bring out to real you. The brilliant, passionate you that's ready to contribute something meaningful into this world."

From two-time Academy Award-winner Pete Docter, the movie follows Joe Gardner (Foxx), a middle-school music teacher on earth who dreams of playing at the legendary New York jazz club The Blue Note. Just when he thinks his dream might be in reach, a misstep sends him to a cosmic realm, where his soul is separated from his body.

His soul is transported to the You Seminar, a center where souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child. There, Joe learns that he must work with other souls in training in order to return to Earth.

According to the film's director Docter, the idea for the story is 23 years in the making. "It started with my son-he's 23 now-but the instant he was born, he already had a personality," he says. "Where did that come from? I thought your personality developed through your interaction with the world. And yet, it was pretty clear that we're all born with a very unique, specific sense of who we are."

Co-screenwriter Kemp Powers says of Foxx's character, "I think Joe is having that crisis that all artists have. He's increasingly feeling like his lifelong dream of being a jazz musician is not going to pan out and he's asking himself 'Why am I here? What am I meant to be doing?' Joe personifies those questions."

Tina Fey voices 22, another soul in the You Seminar. Questlove, Phylicia Rashad and Daveed Diggs voice other characters in the animated movie, which is slated to arrive in U.S. theaters on June 19, 2020.
