Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador will hold a meeting of his security cabinet to discuss the incident in Culiacan that resulted in the release of Ovidio Guzman Lopez.

AceShowbiz - The son of Mexican drug boss Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman has been freed from custody after a mass shootout broke out when he was detained.

Ovidio Guzman Lopez was briefly held by security forces in the Mexican city of Culiacan on Thursday, October 17, prompting masked gunmen to trade fire with security forces, before they released him and retreated from the building where they found him for their own safety and "to recover calm in the city."

A lawyer for the Guzman family told the Associated Press, "Ovidio is alive and free," while Mexico's President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said he would hold a meeting of his security cabinet to discuss the incident.

Ovidio is said to be an active member of El Chapo's Sinaloa cartel, and is reportedly facing charges in the U.S. for conspiracy to traffic cocaine, marijuana and methamphetamine.

Footage shared online shows several armed officers on foot amid the operation to catch Ovidio, plus trucks and jeeps with mounted weapons following behind. Several people have also apparently been seen riding around the city with machine guns who are not part of the army.

El Chapo was arrested in January 2016 and, in July this year was sentenced to life in prison, the minimum he faced, plus an additional 30 years for his conviction for unlawful use of firearms. The judge also ordered him to forfeit $12.6 billion.

He has been behind bars in solitary confinement at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan since his extradition from Mexico in 2017.

Back in 2015, Penn sat down with El Chapo at his jungle hideaway, while he was a fugitive from justice after escaping jail. Their interview about the war on drugs was published the following January - on the day the former Sinaloa cartel boss was re-arrested.
