The 'Stay With Me' hitmaker has reportedly thought long and hard about the using of the gender-neutral pronouns before requesting his nearest and dearest to not call him 'he.'

AceShowbiz - Sam Smith has reportedly asked his loved ones to call him "they" and not "he" after coming out as non-binary.

The 27-year-old singer explained during a chat on Jameela Jamil's Instagram TV series, "I Weigh Interviews", earlier this year (March 2019) that he's "a mixture of all different things," and doesn't identify as exclusively masculine or feminineā€.

"When I saw the word non-binary/genderqueer and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, I was like, 'f**k, that is me,' " he said at the time. "Non-binary/genderqueer is that you do not identify in a gender. You are a mixture of all different things. You are your own special creation."

"That's how I take it - I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between - it's all on the spectrum."

Now, Sam is said to have requested that his nearest and dearest don't call him "he," instead referring to the singer using the pronoun "they."

"This is a decision Sam has thought long and hard about, including doing a lot of reading on up it," a source told Britain's The Sun newspaper. "He knows that it will take some people longer than others to fully get it."

"First the request is going out to mates and then it will be passed on to the music industry too. It's an exciting and groundbreaking time for him."

The report comes after the "Stay with Me" singer thanked radio presenter James Barr on Twitter after he wrote, "Just interviewed Sam Smith and they sounded so happy and free and more themselves than ever."
