The Texas-based star, who was profiled in the 2006 documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston", passed away on Tuesday, September 10, after suffering a heart attack, according to The Austin Chronicle.

Johnston has battled several health issues, including schizophrenia, diabetes, and a kidney infection, in recent years.

The songwriter became a cult icon after Nirvana star Kurt Cobain wore a T-shirt featuring the cover of Johnston's 1983 album, "Hi, How Are You", to the 1992 MTV Video Music Awards.

Johnston released 17 albums throughout his career.
