During the last stop of his 'Divide Tour', the British superstar compares his 18-month hiatus to 'breaking up with a girlfriend that you've been with for years.'

AceShowbiz - No, Ed Sheeran is not retiring from music. He's just taking a long break from performing to focus on making music. The British singer recently debunked rumors that he's going to retire from music after announcing at the last stop of his "Divide Tour" that he would be going on am 18-month hiatus.

Breaking the news to the crowd at his Ipswich, England show earlier this week, Ed reflected on his two-year long tour. "There is something very bittersweet about it. I love that you guys are here and we are ending it in Ipswich. This is my last gig for probably 18 months," he said. "It's been a wild one. I was told before I came on that now at the end of this tour I've played to nine million people around the world. It is the biggest tour ever."

Ed went on admitting that making the decision to go on a hiatus was not an easy one. "It's been an emotional day for a lot of people backstage. It kind of feels like, in a weird way, that you're breaking up with a girlfriend that you've been with for years. It sounds odd but it has been a long tour," he continued.

Even though Ed had made it clear that he would only be taking a break for a little over than a year, a lot of reports suggested that he's going to retire to focus on his personal life. This, obviously, made his fans heartbroken. "Ed Sheeran retiring to play house. It's a sad day for music," one wrote. "Ed Sheeran retiring from music to dedicate his time to his wife and marriage is the cutest yet most heartbreaking thing ever," another comment read.

Ed Sheeran shut down retirement rumors.

Before the rumors spread even wider, Ed took to Instagram Stories to debunk the report. Slamming the media for blowing things out of proportion, the "Shape of You" singer wrote, "I'm not bloody retiring either, press are being over dramatic. I'm having 18 months off to make another album and hang out with my cats."
